"Support during the new teachers’ first year or two may be just as important to their effectiveness as their pre-service training, their state certification, and their subject matter skills." — Michael Strong, Ph.D., Director of Research, New Teacher Center @ UCSC The North Carolina Teacher Academy is a professional development program for teachers established and funded by the North Carolina General Assembly. The mission of the Academy is to enrich instruction and impact student achievement by supporting the growth and retention of highly qualified teachers through research-based professional development in the areas of school leadership, instructional methodology, core content, and instructional technology. The North Carolina Teacher Academy invites YOU to become a member of the first cohort of Beginning Teachers Becoming Accomplished Teachers, a three year comprehensive support program to reinforce best practices in your classroom. This unique support program will consist of one cohort of elementary teachers and one of secondary teachers. As a community of learners, beginning teachers will have the opportunity to participate in a program designed to meet the educational challenges facing new teachers. Prospective teachers who will complete North Carolina Teacher Licensure application at the end of this semester and have applied to teach in North Carolina public schools and will make a three-year commitment to participate in the Beginning Teacher cohort What will I be required to do? Attend three sessions each year, a week-long summer session and two weekend mini-sessions in the fall and spring of each year. Participate in an online professional learning community with your peers. Implement the skills that you learn in your classroom. How will I benefit from this program? You will learn new strategies in the areas most identified in current research that support beginning teachers. You will grow as a teacher by receiving support from distinguished North Carolina teachers. For each session you will earn $100.00/day stipend.
