2010 Residential Programs

Frequently Asked Questions

The North Carolina Teacher Academy is a professional development program for teachers established and funded by the North Carolina General Assembly. The mission of the Academy is to enrich instruction and impact student achievement by supporting the growth and retention of highly qualified teachers through research based professional development in the areas of school leadership, instructional methodology, core content, and instructional technology.

All North Carolina teachers are eligible to attend the Teacher Academy as individuals or as part of a team. Residential summer sessions will be offered at various locations in North Carolina beginning on Sunday afternoon and ending after lunch on Thursday. Participants will be required to complete 12 hours of follow-up activities in order to earn 3.6 Continuing Education Units. Continuing Education Units to acknowledge the benefits of their participation, both to students and to schools, will be awarded upon completion of the follow-up sessions.  No partial stipend or credit will be awarded. Administrators are invited, but are not required, to attend follow-up sessions in order to receive credit.

All participants paid on the teacher salary schedule will receive a $350.00 stipend. Twelve month participants must take annual leave in order to receive a stipend. Participants are eligible for only one stipend per summer. Housing and subsistence for residential academies will be provided by the Teacher Academy.

Priority will be given to teams who have not previously attended a Teacher Academy session.

The North Carolina Teacher Academy professional development aligns with the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards.

This year participants will be able to choose from ten topics.  All modules have been designed to include a combination of current theory supported by direct hands-on activities.
